INTRODUCTION
Have you ever almost achieved a dream, but did not achieve it because you didn’t have enough money? This is a situation most Americans have to go through. 75 percent, according to the Center of American Progress. They have the skills, the dedication, and the brains, but not enough money! Dreams of going to college and getting shouldn’t be crushed because. Colleges are too expensive and that is a bad problem, because people that have the intelligence to attend shouldn’t be put down by their financial status.
WHAT?
College needs to be available to everyone that has the desire. College needs to be more affordable. Most of America agrees with this statement, in fact 75% of America. There are many ways in which the President has tried to make this possible. Barack Obama has tried to improve federal financial aid, such as scholarships, loans, etc. He has also tried to give students better information about their college choices. Also, he has tried providing financial incentives to colleges for lower tuition.
WHO DOES THIS AFFECT?
This affects students of all ages and their families. But, this mostly affects high school juniors and seniors. Seniors and juniors are the most affected, because they know they will have to attend a college/university in the future. The parents of the students are affected as well because every adult wants the best for their child, and they will go to extremities to make it happen. 15% of American people don’t even have a high school diploma (according to Forbes).
WHERE IS THIS HAPPENING?
This is happening all over the United States. According to CNN Money, the most expensive colleges are located in the U.S.A, such as the Sarah Lawrence College & the New York University. We are also the home of the best universities on the planet including M.I.T, Harvard, etc. Some colleges have tried and have made it easier to receive scholarships. One of these colleges is the University of Arkansas.
WHEN?
Over-priced colleges have existed for quite some time. In the past decade, the tuition for colleges have skyrocketed. This makes it harder for people to invest in a higher education for the future. A couple of years ago (2010), students left college owing about 26,000 dollars. Barack Obama has tried a reform in higher education funding, which has been the largest reform (investment-wise) since the G.I. Bill.
WHY IS THIS ?
Colleges are too expensive and people don’t have the money to attend. There are other very necessary expenses that need to be paid besides education like mortgage/rent. Otherwise, you're homeless. Gas is also a necessary expense, because without it, you are pretty much immobile. Food. Definitely, the most important expense, because you can'tlive without it. So, colleges are not as important as these expenses.
HOW?
The government needs more money to pay off debts to other countries. In order to receive this money, they need us to help. According to Forbes, there are many tiny things that make colleges as expensive as they are. This includes the membership to a local gym so students can stay healthy. Wi-fi and cable is another expense and it is necessary. Some foods are also paid for, because food is a must to everyone. Paul Patridge (from Forbes) says that with $5,500, his parents were able to pay for his college at Notre Dame (a really well-known college). Now, tuition there is 10 times greater than it was 30 years ago. Among the many mistakes a college student can make, there are 4 that stand out. Credit card debt, a bad credit score, using the student loan money inappropriately, and reaching for a very expensive college (‘About’ Financial Plans).
POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS
According to President Barack Obama, “If colleges rethink the way they teach and do business, they can save students and taxpayers billions without compromising their educational missions.” He also states that there are 3 key ways to make this happen. The 1st step of this to make sure students graduate faster, so less money is paid. This means that Obama says, give them some support. Motivate them. It is definitely not easy in college. The 2nd step is to slim down non-instructional costs, meaning the money you cannot get a refund from. Don’t spend money on dumb things that you won’t be able to get back. The 3rd step is to make sure learning is also happening outside of the classroom. This is a step, because about 40% (according to The Atlantic) who enroll each fall are 25 or older, so those students may get distracted with the fact that most of them have a job. You can also contact the NASPAA for information on getting financial aid.
CONCLUSION
Colleges are too expensive and this is a problem, because no one should be turned down because of their financial status. This is happening all over our great nation and it affects 3 in 4 of us. We need to make a difference. We need to make one. NOW.
